Capital and Endowment Campaign Management

Johnson & Wales University decided in 2002 to consolidate its southeastern presence in a new campus in Center City Charlotte. The new university offers degrees in Culinary Arts, Hospitality, and Business. Jim Hance, the retired Vice Chairman of Bank of America, is chairing the capital campaign to raise private dollars to fund a portion of Johnson & Wales’ $112 million long-term investment.

Johnson & Wales recognized that, as a new Charlotte citizen, it would benefit from Vandever Batten’s expertise in knowing the local donor community. We joined the Johnson & Wales team in 2003 to develop a campaign plan and to advise university officials as they began to build local relationships. Based on our feasibility study involving 50 local and national participants, recommendations were approved to conduct a $15 million campaign to raise capital, program and scholarship dollars.

After managing all aspects of the capital campaign planning and implementation, Vandever Batten is now playing a campaign advisory role in the final stages of this successful campaign for Johnson & Wales University.

For over 20 years, John Crawford’s vision of sending students from Charlotte’s public housing projects to college has been realized through the Charlotte Housing Authority Scholarship Fund (CHASF). The organization serves as a ray of hope for young people with the desire, but not the funds, to attend college. Now to fund the CHASF in perpetuity, the Hope Scholarship Campaign aims to raise $4 million to supplement the current $1 million endowment. With these increased financial resources, up to 100 students from Charlotte’s public housing projects will be able to attend college each year.

Vandever Batten is managing the endowment campaign and has hired temporary campaign staff on behalf of CHASF to make the fundraising process more manageable for the client.

ImaginOn: the Joe & Joan Martin Center, a unique partnership between the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte and the Public Library of Charlotte-Mecklenburg, was created by a bond referendum passed overwhelmingly by 70 percent in November 1998. Ken Lewis, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bank of America, led the campaign that raised over $13 million for endowment to support ImaginOn programs. This facility, the first of its kind in the country, covers a full city block in the heart of Charlotte’s Center City to serve the children and families of the region.

VB managed all aspects of the capital campaign and its implementation.
